Inaugural Post
I decided to start a blog to share my thoughts and experience building information systems and software for the last 17-odd years. I’ve got a passion for building efficient systems (and building them efficiently) and leading teams to high levels of performance. I’ve learned a lot from my successes (and even more from my failures) and I want to share what I’ve learned with the larger community. Information Technology in general, and software development in particular, are exciting areas in which to make one’s career. It can be challenging, but ultimately very rewarding.
At the same time, I’ve recently developed an intense interest in energy efficiency, especially centered on addressing the climate change issue. I don’t consider myself a subject matter expert in energy efficiency, but I do believe that a key part of thriving in an era of declining energy reserves and damaging climate change is to make the systems we interact with SMARTER. Our homes, our offices, and our cars are all about as smart as they were before World War II: in short, not very. They rely on us, the users, to micromanage them. The trouble is we often can’t be bothered. Energy costs too little for us to spend much time caring about a few watt-hours here and there. But if the systems were smarter, we could spend less time managing them AND save energy and money at the same time.
And, of course, I’ll probably write about some other random things along the way, just to keep things interesting. So, here are the topics on the way: Software development practices, leading teams, making systems smart and energy efficient, home improvement advice, reactions to current events… you get the idea.
I welcome feedback of any kind, positive or negative, as long as it makes me look good ;-)
That’s it for my inaugural posting. Stay tuned!
